How To Manage ‘Spam’ Comments in Shopify Blog

Do you have a blog for your online store? Do you check it regularly for spam comments? Blogs are a great way to update your customers about products and services. They let you tell stories about your business that can convert visitors to customers. One of the great things about blogs is comments. Comments improve customer engagement and allow you to understand their views on your business.

However, if comments are not properly managed, they can destroy your blog’s integrity and pose a security threat to your customers. For instance, spam messages can populate your blog with links to other websites, advertisements, or malicious content. Some spam comments may also contain phishing links or malware.

This tutorial will teach you how to;

  • Create a blog on Shopify,
  • Manage comments on your Shopify blog.

How to create a blog on Shopify

Creating a blog post on Shopify is straightforward:

  1. In the Title field, enter a title for your blog post.
  2. In the Content field, enter content for your blog post.

  2. Click Save.

Managing Comments on your Shopify Blog

Now, you have created a blog for your online store. How do you allow your customers to comment? And how do you ensure the comments are relevant and safe for visitors and users?

When you create a new blog on Shopify, comments are turned off by default. You can choose any of the following options:

  • Comments are disabled: Visitors to your blog can’t leave comments on posts.
  • Comments are allowed, pending moderation: Visitors to your blog can leave comments, but you must review them before they are displayed.
  • Comments are allowed and are automatically published: Visitors to your blog can leave comments, and they are displayed on your blog without your review.

Comments are allowed, and pending modification gives you the ultimate control over the comments in your blog. You get to review each comment and decide which ones are relevant before publication. This way, spammy comments cannot make it to the comment section. However, if you’re getting a lot of comments, reviewing each can become too much work.

With Comments being allowed and automatically published, Shopify checks and flags all blog comments for signs of spam. Flagged comments are not displayed on your blog but in your Shopify admin. You can mark comments as spam manually only on the desktop.

To remove spam comments on your blog, follow these steps;

  1. Log in to your Shopify account.
  2. From your Shopify admin, go to: Online Store > Blog Posts.
  3. Click Manage comments.
  4. Select at least one comment.
  5. Click Actions, and then click Mark as spam.
  6. Optional: Click Actions, then Delete to remove spam comments from your admin.

Why should you remove Spam comments?

  • Spam comments degrade the quality of your content. Removing spam comments ensures your blog’s content remains relevant, credible, and valuable to visitors.
  • Removing Spam comments improves the User Experience of your blog by keeping the discussion focused and free from clutter.
  • Combating spam demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a trustworthy platform. Blog reputation can suffer if it is known for hosting spammy content.
  • Some spam contents contain links to malicious websites or phishing scams. Removing these comments protects visitors from potentially harmful content and activities.
  • Removing Spam improves the chances of ranking higher in search results. Google considers the quality of content and user engagement when ranking websites. Spam comments can negatively affect this ranking.
