How to Remove the Save to Cart Button On Your Shopify Store
Removing the save to cart button on your Shopify store sounds counterintuitive, but it can be a great way to build anticipation for a product, control your sale process or address technical issues on your website. Consider these scenarios;
- New Product Launches: Creating a sense of anticipation can drum up excitement for exciting new product releases. Removing the "Add to Cart" button and replacing it with a "Coming Soon" or "Notify Me" option can generate interest and encourage potential customers to sign up for updates.
- Limited Stock or Pre-Orders: Removing the button for limited-edition products or pre-orders can prevent customers from adding more items than are available. You can replace it with a message explaining the limited availability and provide a waitlist signup.
- Membership Model: Stores with exclusive memberships might remove the "Add to Cart" button for non-members and only display it on members-only product pages. This incentivizes visitors to become members and gain access to purchasing.
- Custom Order Products: For businesses offering highly customizable products, hiding the button and replacing it with a "Contact Us" or "Request a Quote" option can encourage personalized communication to discuss specific needs before purchase.
- Temporary Out-of-Stock: If a product is temporarily unavailable, hiding the button prevents customer frustration from trying to add an unavailable item to their cart. Consider replacing it with an "Expected to restock date" message.
- Website Maintenance: During website maintenance or product page updates, hiding the button can prevent customers from encountering errors while adding unavailable products.
In this tutorial, we’ll take you through how to remove/hide the “Add to Cart button” on your Shopify store.
Hide the Add to Cart Buttons For Specific Products
By default, products are assigned the Default product template. By creating a separate not-for-sale product template, you can hide the Add to Cart buttons for one or more products and leave other products available for purchase on your online store.
Step 1: Create a not-for-sale product template
To customize specific products without making changes to the Default product template, you need to create a new product template.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click Customize.
- In the template selector, click Products > ⊕ Create template.
- In the Create a template dialogue, type a name for the new template into the Name text field, such as not-for-sale, and then click Create template.
- In the Sections navigation sidebar, go to the Template > Product information blocks, and then make the following changes:
- Click the eye icon next to the Quantity selector block to hide it.
- Click the eye icon next to the Buy buttons block to hide it.
- Optional: Click the eye icon next to the Price block to hide it.
- Click the eye icon next to the Quantity selector block to hide it.
- Optional: If you want to add some text to give your customers more information, such as a date when sales are expected to resume, then add and customize a new block:
- Click ⊕ Add block > Text to add a text block.
- Click and drag the new Text block up or down to your preferred position on the product page.
- In the Block settings sidebar, add your message to the Text field.
- Select your preferred Text style.
- Click ⊕ Add block > Text to add a text block.
Optional: If you want to add a contact form, then add and customize a new section:
- Click ⊕ Add section > Contact form to add a contact form.
- Click and drag the new Contact Form section to your preferred position on the product page.
- In the settings sidebar, customize the contact form as desired. For example, edit the heading text field to display a call to action, such as Sending us a request to be added to our waitlist.
- Click Save.
Step 2: Assign the not-for-sale template to products
After creating the not-for-sale template, you can assign it to a single product individually or multiple bulk products.
Assign the not-for-sale template to a single product:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of the product you want to make unavailable for sale.
- Select the not-for-sale template from the drop-down menu in the Theme Template section.
- Click Save.
Conclusion
By following the steps listed above you will be able to remove the ‘Add to Cart’ button on your Shopify store. Generally, this takes about 20-30 minutes of design time.
Removing the "Add to Cart" button should be a strategic decision.
